Sabrina Yen-Ko: MDA and 8 Kinds of Fun — Dominion

One of my favorite games is Dominion by Rio Grande Games, which is a competitive deck-builder where players compete to build the best kingdom.

Aftermath of a particularly lucky combo: buying the right action cards can create some fun runs

Its key mechanic is drawing from your deck each turn to play cards, which can be actions or coins. At the end of your turn, you can buy cards to permanently add to your deck. Playing action cards (actions) and buying cards (buys) are limited resources: you begin with one of each at the start of the turn. However, action cards can grant you additional actions, buys, and help you draw cards or gain money. However, unlike coins, action cards can only be played if you have actions left. This creates the dynamic where players must balance buying action cards versus coins which directly help you purchase additional cards. Buy the right type of cards, and you can create impressive combos, but buy the wrong ones and your deck quickly fizzles out.

Victory - Dominion Strategy Wiki
A victory card: grants you six victory points, but could ruin your combo!

Another key mechanic is its win condition, which is having the most victory points (VPs). However, these VPs are unplayable cards that you add to your deck. This leads to dynamic where players must consider when to start buying VPs as an untimely VP may ruin a precise combo.

These dynamics contribute to Dominion’s aesthetic, which is the challenge of building a deck to outwit your opponents. The varying combos and ways cards can synergize also lead to exploration in the search of new effective strategies for building decks.
