MDA and 8 kinds of Fun – Nchimunya

One game I love is Spoons, a card game that plays like musical chairs but with spoons. It works best with three or more players, and there’s always one fewer spoon than there are players. The core mechanics are simple: each player holds four cards, and on their turn they pick up one card, decide which card to drop, and pass it along to the next player. The goal is to collect four cards of the same value. Once someone does, they secretly grab a spoon, which then triggers everyone else to scramble for the remaining spoons. The player left without one is eliminated.

These mechanics create a really interesting dynamic. There’s a dual focus tension happening at all times: you have to pay close attention to the cards cycling through your hands while simultaneously watching the spoons in the center of the table. This creates constant pressure because slipping up on either front can cost you the round.

What makes it fun is how several aesthetics layer on top of each other. There’s obvious competition since everyone is racing to not be the last one without a spoon. There’s also a stealth element, because if you get four of a kind, you can quietly sneak a spoon and keep a straight face, trying to not tip anyone off. Some players even fake reaching for a spoon to throw others into a panic. This bluffing and social awareness adds a fellowship and sensation dimension too, since the chaos and laughter that erupts when someone finally notices the spoons are being taken is half the fun. All of these layers keep you locked in and engaged the entire game.
