- Some of the women are in love with each other. In a repressive hegemonic society in which women are pressured to marry men to achieve social and financial stability, sapphic relationships simmer beneath the surface. Suddenly, the motive is not just money and power but also lust and revenge, loyalty and betrayal. When women make sapphic partnerships with one another, they commit to splitting whichever inheritances they gain between themselves. At the same time, they may choose to break off this partnership to keep all the money to themselves, betraying their romantic partners. This alliance mechanism not only complicates the dynamics between players for more interesting gameplay, it also enriches the believability of narrative by bringing out all the messiness of real-life relationships.
- The fish that the men hunt are endangered. The game takes an environmentalist slant—the women have been urging the men to use more sustainable fishing practices for years, or to alternately make a living by harvesting the invasive kelp that have overrun the ocean floor. However, the men, traditionalist and patriarchal, refuse. In a last-ditch effort to save their local marine ecosystem, and in order to gain financial freedom, the women target the men to gain control over the fishing industry. It’s an economic coup of sorts.
- A strange storm brews over the horizon. Dark clouds roll in, bringing with them travelers from another land. It soon becomes clear that these travelers have nefarious intentions—so the wives and the fishermen, once enemies, must now work together to defeat this intruder. Who can you trust? Who has already betrayed your trust? This turn is introduced at the end of the game—a final plot twist, meant to fundamentally disrupt the rules of the game and force players to recalibrate their views of one another.
