Short Exercise: What do prototypes prototype?

Q1. How can we create a convincing game environment to make the users ‘lock in’?

This is important because a compelling environment that hooks users can significantly increase engagement and immersion, making them more emotionally and cognitively invested in the game. This could be a simple demo level prototype that uses sound and spatial design, and environmental storytelling to test immersion levels. I assume that layered audio (ambience, reactive sounds) and environmental cues that subtly guide user attention will enhance the feeling of presence the most.

Q2. What is the sweet spot for resembling things from real-life to make the object familiar yet adjusted for the game environment?

This is important because balancing realism and stylization helps reduce cognitive load while maintaining believability and aesthetic harmony with the game world. This could be a set of interactive models showing real-life inspired objects with varying degrees of stylization and simplification. My guess is that a 60–70% resemblance to real-world objects with intentional exaggerations or simplifications for clarity and visual aesthetic will be the most effective.

Q3. How detailed should the prototype be?

This is important because early design stages benefit from quick iterations, but too little detail can fail to convey critical ideas or user experience. This could be tested by multiple fidelity versions of the same interaction (paper-based, medium-fidelity mockup, and high-fidelity interactive prototype) shown to test users. I expect that medium-fidelity prototypes will hit the best balance for being clear enough to communicate the idea while allowing for flexible changes based on feedback.

Q4. How can we use visual hierarchy and layout to subtly guide user attention without overt instructions?
This is important because in early-stage design, guiding user attention through visual cues is key to understanding user flow and ensuring intuitive interaction. We could test this through a series of paper prototype screens with variations in size, placement, contrast, and grouping of UI elements to test how users scan and interact with the interface. I predict that bold contrast, asymmetrical layout, and grouped elements with clear focal points will most effectively direct attention, especially in the absence of interaction cues like interactive motion or sound.
