Checkpoint 1: Concept Doc – Team Heteropsomys

Team members: Aksel Kolasinski, Yifan Xu, Xatrik Bera, snoopy

Synopsis:

We would like to pursue a story where the protagonist finds themself in a town encased by vines, with the twisting foliage encroaching ever deeper with each passing day. The protagonist has to protect the town from the vines, uncovering the mystery of why it is encroaching and threatening the town, and where it came from.

We took inspiration from games with similar themes:

  • DarkWood
  • Six Swans

Tones:

Desperation

Mystery

Foreboding darkness

Uncertainty

We took inspiration from the following games, to help us envision what the above tones felt like through the narrative medium video games can offer:

  • Dark Wood
  • Fear and Hunger
  • Darkest Dungeon
  • Danganronpa THH (enclosed space)
  • SMT: DDS

Setting:

Small town, slowly being consumed by the vines. The boarders of the town are composed by the thick foliage, and are changing with respect to the plot/mission and the vine’s progress.

Gameplay:

  • RPG with a day/night system, where every night the vines creep closer
  • Character building interactions, through NPCs and items

Challenges:

Design:

  • Lots of branching paths would be difficult to account for
  • Balancing cutscenes and gameplay
  • Maintaining interest for the gameplay, as world navigation becomes potentially predictable or repetitive

Tech:

  • Combat, dialogue, and inventory systems can be a pain to make to completion

Art:

  • How do we incorporate vines into the character designs?
  • Different types of vines, without being too repetitive
  • Introducing interesting designs, without making them too foreign/complicated

Intended Audience:

  • 17+
  • People who play and are familiar with RPGs
  • People who enjoy strategy and narratives within games
