3 Directions from Ideation

  • Narrative series of puzzles based on recognizable famous artworks. This direction would involve a series of levels each defined by a different work of art. Each would be a mostly-static 2D visual which a character then explores–maybe with their actual point-mass character exploring the 2D visual space, or maybe the player manipulating the scene via buttons and the crank. Sensation, Narrative, Challenge, and Discovery types of fun.

  • Puzzle based on musical patterns. Challenges based on navigating sheet music as a visual puzzle. Sound using the actual pieces of music could fuel the narrative arc, moving from emotion to emotion. The keys to puzzles would often be finding repeating musical themes, which could be famous recognizable pieces. Using visuals, sound, and game mechanics could make it so that no one approach is the only way to win. Sensation, Challenge, and slight Narrative types of fun.

  • 3D versions of puzzle games, framed as an ocean exploration narrative. Games like Torus (Ben Joffe’s 3D toroidal version of Tetris), air hockey, battleship, and Catan could be expanded to not just be 2D but also involve depth, such that the player slowly voyages deeper and deeper into the ocean. Challenge and Narrative types of fun.
