Critical Play: Games of Chance and Addiction

For my critical play, I played online poker at https://www.247freepoker.com/. 24/7 Games was founded by John Battagline in 2007. Originally, the site was created just for online Solitaire, but it now has dozens of games available to play online at any time.

Poker certainly has chance elements, though skill is also required to be a good poker player. People often talk about luck as if it is part of their identity when playing poker. The level of luck attributed to oneself, however, can change in an instant as the game progresses. For example, getting dealt a few bad hands (no face cards or ace, no matching suits, no consecutive cards) can lead players to feel as if they are simply unlucky. Seeing other players have better starting hands or get a good hand during the flop, turn, or river, can make someone feel as if the others are luckier than them. Similarly, having a seemingly good hand but narrowly losing after the river can prompt the same feeling. If an unlucky streak is followed by a player receiving good starting hands or having an unlikely win after the river, then that same player may begin to see themselves as being lucky.

The element of chance makes it easy to ignore the large role that skill plays in poker. Even the best poker players get dealt bad hands, but they know when to fold, when to check, and when to raise. Understanding the odds of winning and when to take a risk is what beginners often overlook and chalk up to luck instead. There are also some people that blame poor luck for every loss but attribute every win to skill. Being objective about how one’s strategy can be improved is much harder than simply shrugging off a loss as bad luck.

Ethics:

While poker in general can certainly fuel addiction, the online version of poker created by 24/7 Games puts users at a much lower risk for addiction. There is no real money involved in the game; all funds are simply in game currency. Every player starts with one thousand dollars, small blind is one dollar, and big blind is two dollars. Players can raise up to one hundred and fifty dollars.

Another reason that 24/7 Games’ Free Poker is not very addictive is because the player is facing computers. Before the game begins, the player can select a difficulty level: easy, medium, or hard. This difficulty level determines how good the computer opponents are at strategizing. The main appeal of 24/7 Games is that people can play at any time. The freedom to play on demand with zero lag or waiting time for rooms is only possible when not playing against real people.

Regardless, the elements of chance involved in playing poker keep players hooked. A loss can cause users to rationalize the decision to keep playing as a chance to recuperate their winnings and turn their luck around. If the player is on a winning streak, they will want to keep playing to take advantage of their good luck. These beliefs are why playing poker with real money on the line is so addictive. In our own games, using chance is typically morally permissible. It would become impermissible, however, if real money is used for in-game gambling.
