Fiona – Critical Play: Games of Chance & Addiction

I played the card game Flip 7 with my family. It is a physical card game made by Eric Olsen, targeting families, casual party game players, and people who enjoy quick social gambling-style games with low complexity. Flip 7 shows how games built around probability and uncertainty encourage players to reinterpret luck as either personal identity or strategic skill. While the game is chance-based, players in my group frequently attributed outcomes to intelligence, personality, or “good instincts” rather than randomness itself. This reflects a psychological pattern discussed in Designing Chance: Addiction by Design, where randomness creates emotional investment by making players believe they can influence uncontrollable outcomes. 

Although Flip 7 appears harmless as a family card game, it uses many of the same reward structures found in gambling games like variable reinforcement, risk escalation, and “push-your-luck” mechanics. The game creates tension by forcing players to decide whether to stop safely or continue flipping cards to gamble for larger rewards. This uncertainty produces excitement because players believe a good outcome may always be “one more flip away.”

One of the most interesting parts of playing Flip 7 was how differently each person explained winning and losing. My mom consistently attributed her losses to bad luck because she repeatedly drew turn-ending cards very early in rounds. After several unlucky draws, she began talking about luck almost as a personal trait. However, she explained my boyfriend’s success differently. Even though the game is statistically driven, she subconsciously associated his wins with intelligence and strategic thinking because she already views him as very smart.

My boyfriend didn’t agree with this interpretation and argued that his wins mostly came from luck, especially because his strategy was very simple: he would always stop after flipping four cards. Unlike the rest of us, he disliked relying on chance alone and even ran a probability simulation after the first night to calculate the basic strategy. His reaction shows an important tension to balance in game design, as even in highly random systems, players often search for ways to reclaim a sense of control.

Simulation to find the best strategy

The core mechanic of Flip 7 is randomized card drawing with escalating risk. That mechanic creates the dynamic of push-your-luck decision making, where players constantly evaluate whether to continue or stop. The resulting aesthetic experience is suspense and emotional up and downs. The game feels exciting because players alternate rapidly between hope, fear, disappointment, and triumph.

A clever design decision in Flip 7 is how the bonus system encourages irrational risk-taking. Mathematically, conservative play is often safer, but the large rewards for flipping many cards encourage players to take riskier behavior. This creates dramatic moments and social excitement, but it also manipulates player psychology by making stopping feel unsatisfying. The game rewards optimism and punishes caution, even though caution may statistically be smarter.

Compared to other games in its genre, Flip 7 differs because it disguises randomness with an illusion of strategic agency. Games like UNO rely heavily on chance but do not create the same emotional pressure around voluntary risk. Meanwhile, games like Poker involve real strategic depth, bluffing, and probability management. Flip 7 sits between these categories as players feel strategic even when luck dominates outcomes.

One improvement the designers could make would be increasing transparency about probabilities. If the game included clearer information about card distributions or expected outcomes, players might better understand how heavily randomness shapes success. However, the designers likely avoid this intentionally because ambiguity increases excitement. The less players understand the math, the easier it is to interpret luck as personal talent or failure.

Ethics: Flip 7 shows how randomness can contribute to addictive behavior by creating cycles of hope and disappointment. Because rewards occur unpredictably, players stay engaged longer than they might in a purely skill-based game. The excitement comes not from mastery, but from uncertainty. This design is ethically concerning when games intentionally exploit player psychology. Randomness itself is not morally wrong; chance can make games exciting, social, and unpredictable. However, it becomes immoral when designers intentionally obscure probabilities, manipulate players into compulsive spending or play, or create systems designed primarily to maximize engagement rather than enjoyment. Many digital games with loot boxes or gacha mechanics operate this way because they combine random rewards with monetization.

Compared to gambling systems in mobile games or casinos, Flip 7 is relatively harmless because there is no financial risk attached. However, it uses many of the same emotional mechanisms. Playing it made me more aware of how easily people reinterpret luck as evidence of skill, intelligence, or identity.
