Fiona – Critical Play: Puzzles

Blue Prince is my favorite puzzle game of all time. Developed by solo designer Tonda Ros under the studio name Dogubomb in April 2025, it targets adult players who enjoy mystery, strategy, and complex problem‑solving. Players navigate a shifting manor of 45 rooms in search of the elusive Room 46. What begins as an seemingly impossibly complex puzzle becomes, through its mechanics, a deeply gratifying experience. Blue Prince’s drafting system reshapes the player’s relationship to knowledge itself, making understanding, and not items or stats, the currency of progress.

The core mechanic of Blue Prince is the drafting system. Each in-game day, the player begins with a fixed number of steps and builds the mansion room by room by choosing from three randomly offered room blueprints at each doorway. Each time a player opens a door, they decide what room appears behind it, and each decision shapes their path as they navigate the manor. But the floor plan resets every day, so rooms seen today may not be the same tomorrow. Using the MDA framework, the mechanic of drafting generates dynamics of spatial planning, resource management, and risk assessment, which then produce the aesthetic of discovery as you discover new pieces of the world. This is rare in puzzle games, which typically offer static environments. By making the map itself variable, Blue Prince makes the players solve not just the puzzles within rooms, but the meta-puzzle of which rooms to construct in the first place.

Besides being a puzzle game, Blue Prince is also a roguelite: runs reset on failure, and permanent meta‑progression persists across attempts. But it subverts the traditionally combat‑oriented roguelite formula by fusing it with escape‑room‑style puzzle design. Its major innovation is that progression is driven primarily by knowledge rather than stat upgrades. The most meaningful advancement is learning and understanding which rooms spawn under which conditions, which rooms synergise, and which meta‑puzzles have been quietly unfolding in the background.

This design philosophy aligns with Bob Bates’s 1997 framework for good puzzle design that we read. Bates argues that the hallmark of a great puzzle is the “V‑8 response,” the forehead‑slap moment when a solution suddenly feels obvious in retrospect. Blue Prince engineers this moment repeatedly. Its clues are embedded in the environment itself across multiple runs, distributed across letters, paintings, chess positions, and architectural details. Almost every object has a purpose, and puzzles often reference each other across runs, forcing players to connect clues spread throughout the entire mansion. This also fulfills Bates’s criteria of fairness: every answer is contained within the game, even if multiple runs are required to encounter all the relevant information. The puzzles also feel natural to the world; none of them “drop out of nowhere,” but instead are embedded organically in the manor’s eccentric, aristocratic atmosphere.

One critique I have on the puzzle design is the over reliance on what Bates calls excluded middle puzzles, where the player must understand chains of cause and effect across multiple runs before a solution becomes possible. Quite a few puzzles require pulling particular rooms, sometimes in particular configurations, and managing that stress alongside roguelite elements can be very overwhelming. I personally had to write down multiple pages of notes and sprawling connection maps outside of the game to keep track of all the information. For some players, this friction could become an arbitrary obstacle. A possible improvement would be a subtle in-game journaling system to help players track cross-run discoveries without resorting to physical notebooks. It could even give clues by automatically linking information placed in the notebook to help players generate connections.

Ethically, Blue Prince is a good example for how puzzle games implicitly exclude and include certain players based on the assumed knowledge needed for the game. The game assumes a player fluent in English as several core puzzles rely on English-language wordplay. Some Brasilian youtubers I watched really struggled in that section. The game also assumes the player is familiar with chess notation and naming as it’s a recurring theme in the puzzles. The game also currently lacks colorblind accessibility settings, and some puzzles rely on color-based solutions. Thus, the puzzle assumptions in Blue prince favor players with specific educational and cultural background and appear to be designed with a largely American audience in mind.

Ultimately, Blue Prince succeeds because its mechanics are inseparable from its experience. The drafting loop, the roguelite reset, the environmental storytelling, and the layered puzzles ensure that every run brings the player incrementally and excitingly closer to the truth of the manor.
