Short Exercise: What do Prototypes Prototype?

  • What platform will the game be on?
    • The platform affects the controls and interaction style of the game’s design. Our prototype will be analog and likely consist of custom cards or other physical components to facilitate gameplay. We predict that our prototype will require creating some components specific to our game, rather than using existing items like a deck of cards.
  • What type of game will we create?
    • Choosing the type of game helps narrow down the design scope and guides development. Our prototype will be a deception and deduction game, requiring players to interact and think strategically with an element of uncertainty. We plan to create a team vs. team format which tasks players with discovering the team that they were assigned.
  • Will players easily understand the game’s rules and mechanics?
    • If the mechanics are overly complex, players may become frustrated or lose interest early. I believe the prototype will reveal potential flaws in the design, which will help us refine the mechanics to a concise set of rules. We will iterate on our prototype, playing out various scenarios, to finalize our ruleset.
