One game that I grew up playing and really enjoy is Fifa (any year), especially because of the competition and fast-pace of the game. A core mechanic in Fifa is the passing system because it involves a combination of short passes, through balls, and lobs, which gives players tons of control over ball movement. Other key mechanics are player switching, which lets you control different defenders in real time, and the stamina system, which adds consequences to sprinting and pressing on defense too often. With each of these mechanics, they create dynamics that feel like real soccer: quick transitions, tactical build-ups, pressing, counterattacks, etc. For example, holding down the sprint button may help you in the short-term with speed, but that will drain your player’s stamina and forces you to manage pacing like a real game. All of this creates a specific kind of fun: challenge. Every game is a test of strategy and decision-making under pressure. It is also fun to play against friends or rivals online, which adds to the trash talk and general emotional investment into the game. Fifa’s design uses mechanics to simulate the complexity of real soccer while creating a dynamic system that rewards both creativity and discipline. This is what keeps me playing!
