Short Exercise: Learning to Play Closely

Lost Words: Beyond the Page

Since I haven’t played many games myself, I did some research on Lost Words: Beyond the Page from the reading. I watched its full gameplay video on YouTube, and it completely opened a new door for me. I was amazed that a game could be designed in this way?!

I analyzed my surprise. The game makes a boring storybook come alive, and it did a great job of blending the aesthetics of fantasy, discovery, and even expression. The mechanics are split into two parts: one is controlling the character between the words in a journal, and the other is walking into an imaginary game world. This clever combination blends the real world and the imaginary world together. It creatively use the formal element-boundaries to design of different boundaries to switch the player’s role and abilities, which is very smart.

If all children’s stories could unroll words in this interactive way, it would help so many kids who don’t like reading to build a reading habit.

This game makes me feel even more motivated to explore game psychology.
