Final Class Reflection from Alex

My Learning Journey in 247G

Before signing up for this class, nearly all my gaming experience was limited to mobile games. I simply viewed games as casual pastimes and lacked a complete, structured understanding of play and game design. I never realized how many unique forms games could take, nor all the creative work that goes into crafting a compelling interactive experience.
Everything shifted once I joined 247G. Throughout the semester, I got to explore a huge variety of game genres, core design principles, and foundational game engine knowledge. But what truly stuck with me was how lively and energetic every class was. I absolutely adored this atmosphere! Everyone could speak freely, share wild ideas, and discuss different perspectives without restraint. We took part in so many fun activities: sketching concepts, designing small game prototypes, and group playtests. My teammates and I often joked that it felt like we happily traveled back to kindergarten. I’m so thankful to Christina and Butch for creating such an open, welcoming learning space.
Two weekly assignments brought me massive gains: critical play and sketchnotes. Critical Play pushed me to try out a new genre each week and voice my own thoughts and insights. Even though Werewolf and social deduction games are still my all-time favorite, this routine greatly broadened my gaming horizons. I showed up for almost every Monday Game Night, and it easily became the highlight of my week.
Sketchnotes completely opened my eyes. It taught me tons of creative ways to take notes and build mind maps. Drawing little doodles alongside text makes learning so much more fun, and I plan to keep using this method for all my future studies.
I also want to talk about our instructors. Christina is incredibly open and warm. She patiently listens to all our random thoughts, gently guides our discussions, and constantly offers encouragement — and she has an amazing sense of humor! As for Butch, he sets the gold standard for responsiveness. He grades assignments and replies to messages almost instantly. I admire his endless energy and incredible efficiency, and I hope I can learn to be just as productive someday!
In only a few days, I will head back to my home university and my home country. I will cherish every single memory from this course forever. A seed of game creation has sprouted inside me. See you down the road!
