Directions:

  1. My biggest structural inspiration for our game is Super Mario Galaxy
    1. This approach would be structured around a hub world, which becomes more full of life, light, and companions as the player clears out the corruption from the forest. The combat and challenges would be levels that the player enters into from the hub world, and may be able to reenter multiple times to locate different items or accomplish different goals
    2. Narratively, this reinforces the concept of creating a safer world by populating one’s village
    3. It creates fun by providing the player with the fantasy of a cozy clearing in the forest with animal friends 🙂 It also provides fun through challenge
  2. A second inspiration and direction would be a more somber, exploratory tone, like Hollow Knight
    1. In this approach, the world would have some NPCs and towns scattered about, but the player would be free to traverse the world in any direction and any order, fulfilling quests along the way. This would involve combat and platforming in traversal, but would be less linear and have less level-based progression
    2. Narratively, this allows the player to uncover a nonlinear narrative through embedded elements
    3. This creates a fun through exploration, appealing to players who prefer to interact with the world
  3. A third approach would be something more RPG-like, in which the progression is focused on uncovering the mysteries of the forest.
    1. Gameplaywise, this would look like a bigger focus on fetch, travel, and exploration quests. Combat takes a bit of a backseat, and the progression centers around narrative
    2. The narrative becomes more of a mystery. Narrative elements can be part of quests, and the player can spend a longer time discovering what is causing the corruption and meeting the spirits of the forest
    3. This plays heavily into the fantasy of living someone else’s story. It highlights mystery and social connection, which appeals to players who like interacting with fictional characters as well as environments.
