Short Exercise: What do Prototypes Prototype? – Jenny

For context, my team is considering making a card game that revolves around the reaction speed to a drawn card. The reaction is snatching an object. Drawn cards are visible to everyone.

Question 1: How can we ensure that the player who draws the card that prompts reactions not have an advantage/disadvantage?

This is important so there isn’t a feeling of inequality among the player base. We will make differing prototypes that confront this such as rules surrounding required methods of card flipping and required distance from the objects and possibly some apparatus that removes human error from the equation. My guess is that we will go with the former since that is more feasible and will make gameplay go quicker.

Question 2: What should the weight and feel of the grabbed object be like?

This is important since the crux of the game revolves around grabbing this object. Additionally, we are considering adding a rule that penalizes dropping this object, so we might want to increase the chance of that happening. My guess is that the objects will be smoothed (and slippery hopefully) 3D printed round objects, somewhere between mandarin and apple-sized for ergonomics. Weight 3D print would be the most feasible for this, especially if we do end up adding game mechanics surrounding things being inside the objects. Otherwise, stuffed plushies could have been an option.

Question 3: What should be the non-prompt card to prompt card ratio be?

This is important since it controls the pace of the game. I think the prototypes for this question would vary the ratio and would have to be made after we have a more solid ruleset. I think that if there’s no other agency or abilities given to the players, a minute max between prompts makes sense. It’s likely that we are giving players some agency though, so the time in between prompts will be greater than a minute most likely. If we want to lean more strategy and gave hands to our players (akin to Exploding Kittens), I imagine the ratio could be 20:1. If there are no hands but some special draw cards, I imagine 12:1.
