Team Rhizoplagiodontia–Checkpoint 1

Team 2 Gameplay Ideation:

THE STORY:

Our story is set in a world of urban fantasy, where our character, a vigilante, fights to overthrow a tyrant ruling the city and change the city for the better. Throughout their journey, they encounter numerous unique districts, each with their own ringleaders to take down before reaching the BBEG. As each district is restored, the city slowly begins to regain some of its freedom, giving its people hope for a better future.

SETTING:

A futuristic, cyberpunk city separated by different districts which each embody their respective cultures, visuals, and micronarratives. The city is composed of derelict neighborhoods, bustling marketplaces, sterile corporate centers, all with their own ecosystems and stories. Within the city are devices imbued with magic that the protagonist can use, created by the megacorps and arms dealers trying to harness the forces of nature.

HIGH CONCEPT:

A third-person action-adventure RPG set in an urban fantasy city where players become a vigilante fighting to liberate corrupted districts. By exploring unique environments, unlocking new abilities, and defeating powerful ringleaders, players gradually uncover the truth behind the city’s downfall and challenge the tyrant ruling over it.

DISTRICTS (Levels):

Each district is a set of levels (kind of like worlds in Super Mario Bros.) that’s controlled by a ring leader (who will also be the boss of the level). Levels will have their own unique challenges and mechanics that test the player’s problem-solving skills in different ways.

TONE:

  • Tinted with nature:

The cyberpunk-esque style of the environment is counteracted by the greenery overtaking some of the derelict buildings. The idea of nature peeking out of the seemingly abandoned corners of the city symbolizes hope and potential for change.

  • Gritty/dystopian:

The plot itself focuses on the darker aspects of the city, such as crime rings, corruption, and tyranny. This is where conflict finds the main character; an agent of freedom and change meeting a world of imprisonment and rigidity.

  • Hopeful rebellion:

The story is designed to be the opposite of Cyberpunk 2077. What do we mean by this? Instead of the vibe being that of “there are no happy endings,” we want this to be a tale of redemption and healing, where the player feels the inspiration to make the world a better place. And of course, there’ll be some funny dialogue and item descriptions to ease the tension.

CORE MECHANICS:

  1. Character progression and skill upgrades
  2. District Exploration (Discovery + Fantasy)
  3. Environmental puzzles
  4. Ability customization and combat builds
  5. Strategically challenging levels (challenge)
  6. Dynamic combat system

KINDS OF FUN:

  1. Fantasy: Becoming a powerful, stylish vigilante in a living urban fantasy world.
  2. Discovery: Exploring unique districts, finding secrets, and uncovering the city’s hidden power structure.
  3. Challenge: Mastering combat against distinct ringleaders and navigating dangerous districts.
  4. Narrative: Experiencing an emotional story about hope, sacrifice, and rebuilding a broken city.

Unique Selling Point:

Unlike traditional action RPGs, every district introduces unique gameplay mechanics, visual themes, and environmental storytelling. Players continuously unlock new abilities that change both combat and exploration, making every district feel like a fresh experience while contributing to one connected world.

INSPIRATION:

We took inspiration from games with similar themes:

  • Cyberpunk 2077 and Stray: Urban city atmosphere
  • Dead Cells: Combat, skills, parrying
  • Hollow Knight: Interconnected exploration and visually unique areas
  • Zenless Zone Zero: Magic systems and abandoned architecture
  • Genshin Impact: Character gear (artifacts) and progression

CHALLENGES:

Design:

  • Making each district feel meaningfully different (visually, mechanically, and narratively).
  • Balancing combat so it stays challenging but never frustrating.

Tech

  • Creating a flexible ability system that supports mixing powers and creating new builds.
  • Implementing responsive combat with satisfying visual and audio feedback.
  • Developing and integrating gameplay systems within our current technical experience.

Art

  • Establishing a consistent urban fantasy visual language (neon + occult).
  • Differentiating districts strongly while keeping the whole city cohesive.

INTENDED AUDIENCE:

  1. Ages 16+
  2. Players who enjoy action-adventure or action-RPG games
  3. Fans of stylish combat and atmospheric worlds
  4. Players who want a power fantasy with emotional and narrative payoff
