CS247G Summer 2026 – Short Exercise: MDA & 8 Kinds of Fun

A game I enjoy is Flow Water. It is a 3D puzzle game where the player constructs waterways using blocks to direct water flow from sources and activate fountains. The mechanics involve fixed infrastructure such as differently colored water sources and fountains, as well as moveable stone blocks with channels for water flow. The dynamics are rather realistic, in that water will obey gravity, flow through interconnected channels, and activate dry fountains, while blocks can be stacked on top of each other and on other infrastructure. The player is supposed to construct continuous waterways from these blocks so that water from the sources can flow to fountains of the same color, thus creating beautiful and functional water feature landscapes. Apart from the game being aesthetically pleasing, I really like solving the challenges posed by these puzzles, especially when there are interesting mechanisms. For example, there are jets that spray water in the air and moving parts with hidden activation procedures. The aesthetics that appeal to me include sensation because the background music and water sounds are nice, challenge because I get to solve tricky puzzles, and submission/abnegation because I can play to relieve boredom.
