My team is thinking about making a modified version of Bananagrams with added twists and constraints that players can pull.
Question 1: Does adding mechanics like bombs or letter swaps make the game more engaging or chaotic/frustrating?
Why important: Adding mechanics that let you sabotage or interact with other players could transform Bananagrams into much more of a competitive strategy game or, it could just make it feel random and annoying especially if one player gets targeted (I know from personal experience because I always win in Bananagrams lol)
Prototype type: Look & Feel – Play 3 rounds with one new mechanic at a time and watch for player reactions. Do they laugh and have fun when they get these tiles or just seem annoyed when disrupted?
Prediction: Bombs will feel too punishing and create negative social tension; swaps will be satisfying because they give agency; blocks will be ignored because defending feels passive.

Question 2: What’s the right frequency for special tiles – rare enough to stay impactful, common enough to matter?
Why important: If special tiles appear too often the game becomes way too chaotic; too rarely and they’re forgettable additions that don’t change players’ core strategy.
Prototype type: Role – Test three ratios (ex. 1 special per 20 regular tiles, 1 per 10, 1 per 5) and observe whether players adjust their strategy or just treat specials as random noise.
Prediction: 1 per 15-20 tiles is probably the best ratio. This will allow players to anticipate getting at least one per game and plan around it, but won’t build entire strategies around stockpiling them.

Question 3: Does adding constraint mechanisms like forcing players to make words with at least six letters make the game more interesting for players or more tedious?
Why important: Adding these types of constraints could force creative problem-solving (good difficulty) or just add cognitive overhead that removes the flow state (bad difficulty).
Prototype type: Look & Feel – Test each constraint type separately with simple physical aids (pattern cards, grid boundary markers) and watch whether players engage with the puzzle or constantly forget the rule.
Prediction: Spatial constraints (like having to keep the grid 14×14) will work because they’re visually obvious; letter/pattern restrictions might slip through the cracks because it’s more challenging for players to remember them in the heat of the moment.

Question 4: Can the game handle multiple modifier types simultaneously without becoming too complex?
Why important: Combining tactical tiles AND constraints might create too many systems for players to track, turning a fairly straightforward word-building game overwhelming.
Prototype type: Implementation – Create a tracking system (maybe a player board showing active constraints, tile inventory, etc.) and test whether players can manage multiple mechanics without constant rule-checking.
Prediction: Players can handle max 2 active systems (like “special tiles + one constraint type”) but adding more causes confusion and frequent stops to verify rules.
