Game: Mewgenics, Feb 10, 2026, Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel
Mewgenics is a tactical roleplaying game in which you play as a team of cats battling all sorts of wacky creatures to uncover an overarching story.
The first mechanic that makes this game so enjoyable to me is the rougelite aspect. This mechanic can be described as the core gameplay loop remaining the same each time you play through a ‘run’ but the specific items, encounters, enemies, and more will be different each time. Additionally, with each playthrough of the game you unlock meta progress including things like new areas to explore, new items to use, or in this case, new classes for your cats to play as.
Another mechanic that adds to the fun of the game for me is the turn based nature of the gameplay. Each round, your cat gets to take its turn and the same rule applies for each of the enemies in play. This gives you the chance to really think deeply about the steps you want to take during your turn, either to maximize damage, seek out meta currency, or anything in between. This game lets the player have as long as they want on their turns which feels fun for me as I can play at my own pace.
The last mechanic I’ll mention is randomness. Typically in hardcore strategy games, the random elements are tuned down a lot. This game is player vs. game and takes full advantage of that with its randomness. There are huge swings in the good and bad that can happen to your cats and trying to control this and account for the bad really adds to the fun for me. The randomness in this game feels like controlled chaos to me and I love it.
