Hello there! I’m Hongyi, a 2nd year PhD student in Chemistry doing research on sustainable polymers. If you are wondering why I’m here, I did a minor in CS during my undergrad partly because I’m interested in gamedev, and I dabble in personal Unity projects every now and then. I’m very excited to learn more about game design and meet people who are also passionate about games.
My favorite game of all time is Cities Skylines, as it combines the intellectual challenge of keeping a city running without massive gridlocks all over the place and the artistic challenge of building a beautiful and pleasing urban environment. The creative freedom is endless, especially when combined with workshop assets and mods contributed from players around the globe. Honorable mentions here include Civ 6 and Kerbal Space Program.
A recent game I enjoyed is Tiny Glade. It is also a sandbox building game but focused on building medieval structures like castles and farmhouses. What really intrigued me is the insanely beautiful and stylistic art style and the procedural generation of structures in the game. Every screenshot feels like an artwork. The developers also hid a lot of details and easter eggs in the generated structures which is very fun to explore. Procedural generation is something I really want to explore in gamedev.
In case you are wondering why that camera has a disproportionally sized lens, I’m a birdwatcher as well. Maybe a bird-themed game one day?
