MDA & 8 Kinds of Fun – Andreas

I love the game Minecraft, but because it’s such a vast game with so many different possible dynamics, I’ve decided to write specifically about the Minecraft mini game SkyWars.

Minecraft SkyWars’ mechanics:

  • A set number of players (typically around 12) each spawn on their own mini sky island (1 of 12), all surrounding a larger main sky island.
  • If you fall into the void or are killed, you lose. The last man standing wins. All game “physics” are standard Minecraft.
  • The island you spawn on has some amount of loot, while the larger island typically has more and better loot (better weapons etc).
  • As is the case in Minecraft, you can gather resources and blocks to help you

Dynamics:

  • It’s a PvP game (last player standing wins)
  • There are many different strategies
    • You can stay on your island
    • You can bridge to the main island
    • You can bridge to other player’s island
    • You can play offensively or defensively
      • One classic strategy is to try to shoot people into the void with a bow or with snowballs while they are bridging and exposed.

I think the mechanics set up a really fun dynamic because there are many different approaches to win. I’ve won many games by going on the offensive and hunting other players down, but I’ve also won playing conservatively using long-range weapons. As far as aesthetics that are created, I think the main one is challenge, and this comes through from the mechanics/dynamics in many ways. It is difficult to bridge over while staying alive, there is skill and dexterity involved in Minecraft combat, and there is also the challenge of determining what strategy makes sense based on how you perceive other players. I love the competitiveness of the game and how challenging it is to “get it right”.
