Short Exercise: MDA & 8 Kinds of Fun – Lisa Ing

On any family road trip, vacation, or party, I always make sure to have a deck of UNO cards on hand.

Mechanics of UNO:

  • Each player starts off with a set of cards and takes turns placing cards into the card pile according to card number or color.
  • The player who gets rid of all their cards and says UNO first is the winner.
  • Your fellow players may draw cards that can skip your turn, add more cards to your deck, or simply choose colors that you don’t have.
  • Likewise, you’re able to strategize with your own card deck to sabotage other players and reach UNO before them.
  • There’s special cards with different functionalities that control the game, like choosing the color, reversing the play order, skipping a turn, drawing additional cards, or even swapping decks with other players.

These game mechanics encourage a race to the finish with the ability to sabotage other players, which creates a sense of challenge and competition. While there’s some amount of strategy involved with your card plays, any new cards you receive are completely by chance due to the draw pile mechanic, which keeps player dynamics balanced and interesting. For example, a player who’s incredibly good at stacking cards may very well be sabotaged by a +4 card and another player who’s unfortunately drawn 20 cards may have the opportunity to swap decks with another player, should they have the appropriate Wild Card. These special cards help control the game and create a game environment that’s up to the luck of the draw, which is all in good fun!
