Short Exercise: MDA & 8 Kinds of Fun – Dorian Gulley

One of my favorite video games is Terraria. The intense boss fights, elaborate power systems, and fun weapons make for an experience that is both intense and imaginative. As evident from its depth and complexity, Terraria is built upon a variety of mechanics. I’ll explore a couple here.

  1. One of Terraria’s most important mechanics is player movement. To outmaneuver enemies, it is crucial that a player enhances their movement. Accessories like Hermes Boots or Aglets can be worn to increase a player’s speed, which is useful for earlier stages of the game. Later on in the game, it is important to acquire flight and a dash ability. Enemies become stronger and more agile, so being able to dash or fly as a means of evasion will become incredibly useful. Additionally, improving your movement is useful for simply exploring your world more efficiently.
  2. Another important mechanic is combat. There are four main categories of weapons in Terraria that you can use for combat. First, there are melee weapons, like swords, which offer high damage but can only be used effectively at a short range. Secondly, there are ranged weapons, like bows or guns, which fire projectiles that can be used to attack far away enemies. Third, there are magic weapons. Each magic weapon has its own unique ability but quickly drains a player’s mana when used too frequently. Finally, there are summoner weapons, allowing players to summon minions to fight on their behalf.

Overall, Terraria’s mechanics form the basis for a game that offers dynamic fighting and exploration, creating its challenging aesthetic. 10/10, would recommend!
