A game that I have come to love recently is Scattegories. For those of you that haven’t played before, Scattegories is a pen and paper game where, under a certain time limit, you have to come up with words that fall into any of the unique categories of a list. All of these words have to start with a chosen letter, which is decided randomly. You win by having the most unique words out of everyone in the group (i.e. nobody chooses the same words you wrote). Here is an example of me playing Scattegories.

Even though Scattegories is not a digital game, the simplicity of its mechanics makes the dynamics extremely malleable because it is highly group-dependent. The mechanics of scattegories includes pen, paper, and a list generator (something like this). The categories are revealed as soon as the timer goes off, creating a dynamic of competition where we all want to outpace each other by finding as many words that fit the list. However, this is not the best part of the game. The best part comes when the timer goes off, and we go through each category on the list and share the words we have written down. Here, anything can occur. Hot-headed players can debate their way from top to bottom about why their word fits the category, others will be mad because they wrote basic words, and there will also be some (like me) who just so happen to write a word that is so niche that THE OTHERS IN THE GROUP DO NOT BELIEVE IN THE WORD I WROTE -_- (I am not hot-headed). This ultimately creates the aesthetic of sensation and challenge, all the while making you love (or hate) your friends even more than before!
