Three Directions:

  1. Representing Van Gogh’s mind with layers of the puzzle box. In each level, the player unlocks parts of Van Gogh’s memories, creativity, and ideas. This can progress from more tangible things to more abstract concepts, for example first unlocking things like journal entries and letters, and then later unlocking stars, brush strokes, etc. This could contribute to an interesting narrative overall.
  2. Having the box change as the player solves the puzzle. The box can represent a piece of art itself, for example solving one puzzle could turn components of the box such as locks and gears into swirls and stars or other things Van Gogh is known for drawing. As the player progresses, they realize that the box resembles a painting/art itself as its being pieced together.
  3. We could have two versions of each puzzles, one representing reality and one representing imagination. The player can switch between the two versions and understand the story of Van Gogh’s experience and artistry. The reality version could be very ordinary, and the imagination version can be very artistic and vivid to highlight Van Gogh’s vision as an artist.
