The first time I rotated the world in FEZ, a flat wall suddenly became a path. Something that looked completely impossible from one angle made sense from another. That moment made me realize that FEZ was not just asking me to solve puzzles. It was asking me to question what I thought I was seeing. FEZ was created by Polytron Corporation, with Phil Fish working on design and art, Renaud Bédard on programming, and Disasterpeace on the music. It was originally released for Xbox 360 and is now available on PC, PlayStation, Switch, and iOS. I played it on PC. The game is aimed at players who enjoy puzzle-platformers built around exploration and discovery, especially players who do not mind experimenting, getting stuck, and figuring things out without much explanation. FEZ makes perspective both its main gameplay mechanic and a major part of its story. At the same time, some of its hardest puzzles show that “thinking outside the box” can be difficult when the game never tells you what the box is.
At the beginning of FEZ, Gomez believes that his world is two-dimensional. After receiving a magical fez, he discovers that there is actually a third dimension and gains the ability to rotate the world between four different views. This ability is more than just a gameplay feature. It represents Gomez realizing that his understanding of the world was incomplete. The player goes through a similar process. At first, we only see the world from one angle and assume that is all there is to it. As we learn how rotation works, we start noticing connections that were hidden before. Gomez is learning to see his world differently at the same time that the player is learning how to play the game.
The connection between the story and the gameplay becomes even more obvious when the Hexahedron shatters and the world starts falling apart. Gomez has to collect cube fragments in order to repair what has been broken, but the game does not spend much time explaining the situation through long cutscenes or dialogue. Instead, the player learns what is happening by exploring the world and noticing changes in its appearance and behavior. The game also keeps forcing the player to use perspective in order to move forward. FEZ does not have to directly tell the player that perspective is important because the player is constantly experiencing that idea through the controls.
There are really two levels to FEZ’s puzzle design. The first is the basic perspective-based platforming. By rotating the world, platforms, doors, ladders, and other objects can line up in ways that were not possible from the previous view. Since the game treats the current perspective as a two-dimensional space, a jump that seems impossible can suddenly become easy after one rotation. These puzzles work well because the game teaches the mechanic naturally. The player sees a problem, tries rotating the world, and eventually realizes what changed.
The second layer of puzzles is much less straightforward. FEZ includes the Zuish alphabet, different number systems, QR codes, Tetris-like input codes, and other secrets that are barely explained. These puzzles change how the player approaches the game. Instead of only experimenting with the environment, players may start writing down symbols, looking for patterns, comparing information from different areas, or discussing discoveries with other players. In MDA terms, the mechanics of rotation and decoding create a dynamic where players reinterpret things they have already seen and sometimes work with other people to make sense of them. That creates an aesthetic of discovery. I think an optional cipher key hidden somewhere in the world could have made these puzzles less frustrating without taking away their mystery.
FEZ is also interesting when compared with other puzzle games. Monument Valley and Gorogoa both use perspective and visual tricks, but their puzzles are usually more contained and easier to understand as you progress. Portal is another useful comparison because it introduces its mechanics gradually and gives the player enough information to understand what each new mechanic does before asking them to use it in a difficult situation. FEZ is much more willing to leave players confused. It also has something in common with Myst, where the environment itself contains clues and players are expected to remember information and sometimes take notes. What makes FEZ different is that perspective is not just something the player observes. The player actually changes the world by rotating it, which makes the game’s ideas about perception much more personal.
This leads to an ethical question about accessibility and who gets to experience all of FEZ. Some of the game’s deepest puzzles assume that players already have certain kinds of knowledge. The cipher is based around the English alphabet, QR codes require familiarity with a specific piece of technology, and the Tetris-style codes depend partly on knowledge of video game conventions. Some puzzles are also much easier for people who are comfortable with patterns, codes, or cryptography. When FEZ was released, players could also turn to online communities to share discoveries and work together on the hardest puzzles. That means the game’s idea of “lateral thinking” is not completely separate from a player’s background. Someone with more experience with these things may have an easier time than someone seeing them for the first time.
This changed how I think about difficult puzzles. I usually think of “thinking outside the box” as something that rewards creativity and does not require a specific answer or background. FEZ made me realize that there is always some kind of box, even when a game tells you to think beyond it. If a puzzle expects the player to recognize a certain cipher, symbol system, technology, or cultural reference, then solving it depends partly on whether the player already knows what to look for. I still think the mystery is one of the reasons FEZ is so memorable, but I also think an optional hint system could make the experience better. Players who want to solve everything on their own could ignore the hints, while players who are completely stuck would still have a way forward.
Ultimately, FEZ works so well because its story and its mechanics are closely connected. Gomez learns that his world is larger than he originally believed, while the player learns that the game’s spaces cannot always be understood from a single viewpoint. The game makes perspective something the player has to practice rather than something the story simply talks about. However, its most difficult puzzles also reveal a contradiction. A game about seeing things from different perspectives can still expect its players to have certain knowledge and experiences in common. FEZ shows how powerful discovery can be when it becomes part of the story, but it also shows that designing around discovery means thinking about who has the tools to make those discoveries in the first place.
