Critical Play: Competitive Analysis

The most tense moments in Among Us happen when everyone has a different explanation for the same event. A player reports a body, everyone starts arguing, and suddenly an ordinary movement through the map becomes evidence of betrayal. Among Us, developed by Innersloth, is a multiplayer social-deduction game available on PC, mobile devices, and consoles. Its primary audience is players who enjoy multiplayer games built around communication, deception, and social competition, particularly groups of friends who can discuss and accuse one another. Our team’s concept builds on this same social-deduction foundation, but replaces a fixed enemy identity with an infection system in which aliens can convert humans to their team.

Among Us demonstrates how hidden identities and incomplete information can create strong social tension, but its central question is mostly about discovering who the enemy secretly is. Our concept uses a similar foundation while creating a different dynamic: players must not only determine who the original alien is, but also consider whether someone has been infected and changed sides. This makes changing alliances the central source of uncertainty.

Two of Among Us‘s most important formal elements are its objectives and conflict. Crewmates must complete their tasks while identifying and eliminating the Impostors, while Impostors attempt to eliminate the Crewmates without being discovered. Because identities are hidden, players have incomplete information and must interpret the behavior of everyone around them. The game’s procedures create structured opportunities for players to resolve this uncertainty through emergency meetings, discussion, and voting.

The game’s MDA relationship is especially clear during an emergency meeting. The mechanic of allowing players to discuss suspicious behavior and vote to eliminate someone produces the dynamic of players constructing competing explanations from incomplete information. This creates the aesthetic of suspicion and paranoia. A player might accuse someone for being in the wrong location, while that player offers an alternative explanation. Neither side necessarily has complete evidence, so communication becomes a major part of the game’s strategy. The result is that even ordinary movement around the map can become socially meaningful.

Our concept borrows one of Among Us‘s strongest ideas: uncertainty is more interesting when players have to interpret other players instead of simply receiving all the information they need. The hidden identities and communication systems give players a reason to pay close attention to what everyone else says and does. As Wodtke argues, there is little value in reinventing successful design ideas simply for the sake of being different. Our concept therefore keeps the social-deduction foundation rather than trying to replace it.

However, our main design decision deliberately changes the source of uncertainty. In Among Us, the Impostor begins the game as the enemy, and the main question is whether the players can discover that hidden identity. In our concept, the Alien can infect another player during the nighttime. That player then joins the Alien team, meaning the number of enemies can change as the game progresses. The central question becomes not simply “Who is secretly an alien?”, but “Who has become an alien?”

This creates a different strategic experience. Players have to consider whether someone was trustworthy earlier but may no longer be trustworthy now. The changing team structure also gives the Alien player a reason to carefully choose who to infect, while humans have to make decisions with incomplete information. Our differentiating axis is therefore fixed hidden identities versus changing alliances. We want to borrow Among Us‘s social tension while making transformation and uncertainty about allegiance a more important part of the experience.

Among Us belongs to the social-deduction genre alongside games such as Mafia and Werewolf. Like these games, it relies on hidden roles, discussion, deception, and group voting. However, Among Us differentiates itself by placing these mechanics inside a playable environment rather than having the entire game occur through discussion. Players move around a map, complete tasks, encounter other players, and create evidence that can later become part of an accusation. This gives players more opportunities to generate information before meetings occur.

One particularly clever design decision is the way Among Us makes ordinary gameplay contribute to social deduction. Seeing another player near a body or noticing that someone was absent during an important event can become evidence during a meeting. This connects the game’s movement and objectives to its communication mechanics instead of treating them as completely separate systems.

One improvement would be to give players slightly more ways to preserve meaningful information after an accusation. Because discussions can sometimes become dominated by confident players rather than reliable evidence, new players may struggle to understand why certain accusations are persuasive. A clearer way of communicating observations could help newer players participate without removing the uncertainty that makes social deduction interesting.

Our concept can learn from this connection between gameplay actions and social communication while making infection the event that changes the game’s social structure.

Among Us succeeds because it turns incomplete information into social tension: every action can become evidence, and every player has a reason to question everyone else. Our concept carries that principle forward but changes what players are uncertain about. Instead of only searching for a hidden enemy, players must track how the enemy can grow. The main design implication we are taking forward is to make changing alliances through infection the central mechanic that drives suspicion, communication, and strategic decision-making.
