Sketchnote: Loops & Arcs

Describe a game you enjoy and what kind of architecture it has.

One of my personal favorite games is Liên Quân Mobile (Arena of Valor), a fast-paced 5v5 MOBA where two teams compete to destroy their opponent’s base. This game successfully highlights the loops and arcs architecture due to its cyclical gameplay loops and its overarching progressions. Looking at the basics, players engage in short loops such as farming minions, gaining/earning gold and experience, upgrading items, and fighting enemies. These loops are quick, continuous, and rewarding, therefore being able to keep players constantly engaged. Over time, these repeated actions build larger arcs, such as the progression from early game (focused on farming and positioning) to mid game (team fights and destroying pillars) and finally, late game (high-stakes battles where one mistake can decide the outcome). This creates a sense of rising tension and climax, similar to a story structure. Additionally, players are able to experience a power arc as their hero grows stronger, and an emotional arc as the match shifts from confidence to pressure and excitement. Overall, Liên Quân Mobile uses small satisfying loops that gradually shape the larger arc of each match, making every game feel dynamic, strategic, and meaningful.
