Sketchnote: Loops & Arcs

Why I Keep Coming Back to Slay the Spire

I’ve spent hours playing Slay the Spire, and I still keep coming back. Every run feels really different, even though the core mechanics never change. Every battle, card reward, relic, and path choice lets me to rethink my strategy and that’s interesting.

After reading Dan Cook’s Loops and Arcs, I realized that Slay the Spire is built around a loop-based architecture. The core loop—fight enemies, earn rewards, improve my deck, and make the next decision—repeats throughout every run. This helps me to learn from both successes and mistakes. At the same time, progressing through the Acts and eventually facing the Heart gives each run a clear beginning, middle, and an end.

I think that’s why the game stays so engaging. The loops keep every decision interesting, while the arcs make each run feel like a complete journey. Even after hundreds of hours, I’m still learning something new every time I play.
