Learning to Play Closely: GTA V

GTA V is a game intended to let you relax into freedom and show you the consequences of this freedom at the same time.

Playing as Trevor in the game initially feels like catharsis. It’s like the tension you hold up in expectation can be released and you can just unleash all sorts of mayhem. With other characters, violence feels like it’s in the aim of an overarching goal. With Trevor, it feels like violence is simply a figment of freedom. But this freedom doesn’t feel light at all. The game shows you the cost of this freedom implicitly — how grumpy, disagreeable, and downright horrifying Trevor’s life is. It feels like it’s giving you a warning sign of what’s to come if you always act on your impulses and do whatever you want. And to add insult to injury, they don’t even make him a handsome guy.
