One game that I love is Balatro since its mechanics create a very rewarding (when you win) experience through challenge and randomness. The core mechanisms revolve around playing poker hands and collecting jokers with unique abilities. You also have to manage your money so that you can improve your deck between rounds. While the base mechanics are pretty simple, if you know how to play poker, there is a lot of depth around each aspect of the game and a lot of strategy required. These mechanics make it so that every decision has long-term consequences and one small thing can change the whole course of your run. I have to decide whether to spend money on a joker or save it for better upgrades later. I also have to strategize by, like, comboing certain jokers together to have synergy; otherwise, if you don’t know what you are doing, you’re basically fried. This creates meaningful strategy because a good combination of cards and jokers completely changes the outcome of a run, and you can’t rely on the same strategy every game because everything is randomized, so you must adapt to new situations. Overall, it’s very hard to get bored with this game since there is so much content, and every run you feel like you are playing something new. Challenge and discovery are the core aesthetics for this game because while it challenges you to meet score requirements, it also lets you discover new jokers and combinations in every run. These mechanics make the game very engaging because victory feels earned despite all the luck involved.
