MDA and 8 Kinds of Fun – Jack Y

A game I have enjoy a lot is clash of clans. Some mechanics of the game are deploying troops to attack other bases, creating your own base layout, and upgrading your buildings and troops. The upgrading of buildings and troops and leveling up of the town hall creates the dynamic of progression. The game is very long term and you have to play for many years to be maxed out. Another dynamic created is strategy from attacking other bases and trying to 3 Star them, which is destroying every building in their village. The progression side of the game creates fun through submission where you can grind for gold, elixir, and dark elixir which is used to upgrade your village and there are casual attacks where not 3 staring another base has no negative effects and you can just zone out and grind loot. The strategy side of the game creates challenge, you can do ranked attacks where 3 staring another base gives you trophies that allow you to rank up. There are clan wars where you join other players in a clan and go against other clans in attacks which is more competitive. Personally I enjoy both the challenge and submission sides of the games, sometimes I don’t feel like grinding a ton of loot to upgrade and I only log on to do my clan war attacks and ranked attacks, and other times when I’ve been more inactive I’ll spend hours grinding loot to get my builders working again.
