Hello, I’m Aksel Kolasinski (he/him).
Predominantly, I play older JRPGs on the PS1 and PS2. My favorite game of all time is Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga (1 and 2 are essentially a package deal). Both take on raw topics of metaphysics relating to life and death by placing the characters in a world where carnal struggle is necessitated and through the inclusion of Hindu mythology. Of turn-based RPGs, SMT: DDS offers the “press-turn” system, which adds greater stakes and strategy into what might be a boring game genre. I like these games for their serious tone, brutal gameplay, and amazing art and soundtracks.
A more recent game I’ve enjoyed is Riichi Mahjong. I mostly play video games and was actually introduced to Riichi Mahjong by the Yakuza series about a year ago. I continue to play a hanchan almost daily, so it’s recent for that reason. Riichi Mahjong is great for its extensive strategy based on logic and probability but also its inherit randomness. The more you play and understand, the more the stakes of any given game are apparent. If anyone else plays Riichi Mahjong, I’d love to play together in person!
