Stardew Valley is such a widely popular game, possibly because it touches on so many different core aesthetics. First of all, it has very visually stimulating artwork, with different seasons or weathers having vibrant color palettes, it is able to give the readers a pleasure of sensation, its art style is so unique that the pixelated hen has become an icon. You start the game off as someone inheriting your grandfather’s farmland in a far away valley, the concept of leaving the current work and responsibilities to start a new life in a secluded village with fun little spirits is a concept that many people would perhaps like to do but it is physically impossible to achieve, so stardew valley satisfies the fantasy aspect of game aesthetics. There is a narrative storyline, but the game imposes a challenge that the player is only able to discover the narrative storyline after interacting with the NPCs and completing tasks. There is a discovery aspect of the game that allows the players to slowly unveil everything going on in this valley at their own pace. Since each player is able to do everything accoding to their own timeline, there is also a sense of experssion and self discovery as this game can really take on many different flavours depending on the player preferences, one could try to reach perfection in all achievements, or spend all their time decorating their farm, or try their hardest to be there for every single storyline element with the NPC villagers, or go down in the mines/skull cavern for as deep as possible etc. Lastly, even though this game is designed to be a single player game, there is also the option to make a farm with friends which taps into the fun of fellowship as well.
