A game I’ve been loving since the summer is Dress to Impress on Roblox where players dress up and curate an outfit according to a shared theme (e.g. “Book Club” or “Goth”). After the timer runs out, players compete on the fashion runway to decide the top 3 winners.
The most relevant mechanic within the game is the dress up portion. Players are given 5-6 minutes to create an outfit and accessorize their avatar. The Dressing Room provides options for hair, makeup, skin color, shirts, pants, dresses, jewelry, etc – essentially giving users full creative freedom over their final outfit. This dress up mechanic in Dress to Impress stands out from its competitors because players are given the opportunity to layer certain pieces on top of others. Through its large range of customization, the mechanics create a dynamic that increases the difficulty where experienced players can discover more creative layering combinations or optimal outfit designs to set them apart from beginners.
Another important mechanic in the game is the layout of the Dressing Room. Players can navigate around The Dressing Room to find the specific item they desire. For example, the Dressing Room has a separate “salon” section where players can change their skin color, hair, makeup, and nails. The mechanics of this layout paired with the walking speed of players and the timer contributes to a more competitive environment where players must remember where certain items are located to maximize their limited time.
Both these mechanics combine to create an dynamicof high stress and tension where players are rushing to finish their outfits in time, while also competing with the rest of the lobby.
