Short Exercise: MDA & 8 Kinds of Fun – Eleanor

One of my favorite games is Overcooked. I always enjoy playing Overcooked with my partner because he’s always there to play with me. I also find it fascinating to play with friends (preferably four people including me). The core aesthetics it delivers are challenge and fellowship (for multiplayer).

The mechanics are simple. Players’ actions involve move, run, grab/release, operate, and throw (only available in Overcooked 2). A list of food orders comes in sequence, each with a time limit. There’re some terrain constraints as well. For example, players are separated, not all tabletops/items are accessible to all players, doors have to be opened by another player pressing a distant button, etc.

All these basic mechanics create a busy and collaborative dynamic where each player may have a different role and everyone has to cooperate to fulfill the customers’ orders. It is usually quite challenging to earn three stars, so it can create tension among players if someone is not doing a good job.
