Creating this interactive fiction has been a unique and challenging experience, particularly since it’s my first time writing in this genre. I came into it with only limited exposure to interactive fiction, so I chose to work with a familiar theme — a detective storyline — as a foundation. This choice helped me generate my ideas, allowing me to focus on developing the interactive gameplay rather than becoming overwhelmed by new content.
One of the biggest surprises in crafting this piece was discovering how integral interaction is to the overall experience of digital gameplay. In interactive fiction, the way information is presented is almost as important as the information itself. Even small choices, such as placing information on the same page, revealing it on a new page, or making it appear after a click, can drastically shape the emotions and perceptions of the player. For example, when all details are available on a single page, players may feel a sense of clarity or confidence, while staggered or click-triggered reveals build suspense and tension, inviting players to pause, consider, and sometimes doubt their decisions.
Additionally, I realized that interaction is a tool for steering the player’s experience without explicitly dictating it. By giving players the power to connect the dots in the story, they don’t simply observe the narrative — they become a part of it. This aspect of choice, even when all possible paths were designed by me, gives players agency, allowing them to project their own perceptions onto the storyline. For instance, in this story, players step into the role of a therapist, with each response shaping a version of the truth that fits their own interpretation of the events. The “truth” they uncover reflects not only the information given but also the direction they chose, creating a personalized experience that’s uniquely their own.
Overall, crafting interactive fiction has been eye-opening, revealing the delicate balance between storytelling and gameplay. I’ve learned that each narrative choice doesn’t simply convey facts but also invites players to connect with the material in different emotional states.
