Short Exercise: MDA & 8 Kinds of Fun

A game that will always have a special place in my heart is Kirby Super Star Ultra.

In the game, you have the option to follow 7 different story lines including, my personal favorite, “Arena” in which you are challenged with defeating every single one of Kirby’s foes. You can also participate in multitude of sub-games. The main mechanics of Kirby Super Star Ultra include inhaling enemies to acquire their ability, transforming said acquired ability into a cute CPU buddy, and reverting said buddy back into its ability so you can acquire it once again. These mechanics allow the player to have access to a great deal of powers that can be used to help get through the level and defeat bosses. There are 25 abilities that are “copy-able” and copying the ability gives you a subset of the powers that the enemy you inhaled had. Some abilities have a limited time use such as the “Cooking” ability in which the all the foes nearby get into a pot and are cooked; this ability last approximately 10 seconds. Other abilities are able to be held for as long as you may like. These mechanics make the dynamics of the game possible. Getting through levels and fighting bosses are both so much easier when Kirby has an ability. The mechanics and dynamics are what make the game so enjoyable. It is so incredibly fun when you come across a rare ability like “Mike” or trying to master the powers of the different abilities in the “Arena”.
