MDA & 8 Kinds of Fun – Whayden Dhamcho

A game that I enjoy playing is NBA 2k, which I’ve been playing since NBA 2k11, making it around 15 years since I started playing. The mechanics in this game would be the player actions, such as dribbling, shooting, passing, and defense; the player stats that determine how good they are; player animations that determine how a player executes their moves; player progression in MyPlayer mode; and multiplayer components to play with other people in MyPlayer or MyTeam.

Having played basketball my whole life, the mechanics of play create this realistic dynamic of being able to play basketball however you want, whether that be utilizing isolations or pick-and-rolls, using fast breaks or running set plays, however you want to play the game, you can. This, along with the ability to create your own player and progress through your journey in the league, helped produce a fantasy aesthetic for me where it was like I was playing in the NBA myself. The added customization of animations, player clothing, and flexibility in how to play the game added a layer of expression to allow me to play the game how I like to play in real life. The mechanics of shooting and dribbling in particular, where you have to learn how to time your shots and chain dribble moves together to create combinations, helped reinforce the dynamic of realistic basketball and created challenge by requiring skill in order to improve and compete with other players or the CPU. That, coupled with the online component of playing with and against others, added fellowship to the game as well, where I could play with friends in different game-modes. This amalgamation of features that create an immersive and collaborative basketball experience is what has kept me coming back to the game through all these years.
