Forza Horizon 6 is my favorite new game, and for good reason—especially when you don’t have to pay extra for it with Game Pass. Everything about it has reinvigorated my love for racing/driving sims. When examining its specific aesthetics, I see elements of sensation, fantasy, challenge, fellowship, and a bit of discovery throughout the game; however, I will focus on the sensation aspect for this assignment.
The basic mechanics that form the dynamic—and ultimately the aesthetic of sensation—are the driving physics, the engine simulations, the visual and audio engines, and the map. Driving in FH6 is fundamentally simple: you hit the accelerator and steer. Yet, it is the instant response of getting launched and the vibration of the controller at high speeds that makes the experience feel incredibly real. While the engines themselves usually cannot be seen, you can definitely hear their distinct differences. When that raw sound is processed through the audio engine, it becomes even better, so much so that there have been plenty of occasions in its short time out that I’ve got on just to drive around and listen to the engine noises.
Both the audio and visual engines work together to make the environment feel authentic. For example, when you exit a dark tunnel into the bright outdoors, you have to adjust to the sudden change in light, which FH6 depicts brilliantly. Similarly, when you enter a tunnel, your engine noise makes an echoey boom exactly like you would expect. Finally, the map of FH6 is beautifully designed and photo-worthy at every turn. Overall, this combination of beauty and realism forms an impressive sensory dynamic that is close to reality yet distinctly more engaging, ultimately providing the player with an aesthetic of pure sensational pleasure while exploring.
