Narrative Directions

My team has tentatively decided on a top-down point and click visual novel for our P2 project, so my brainstorming is primarily focused on story and plot development. Our basic idea is that the player character is a neutral third party thrust in the middle of two conflicting groups. The conflict pushes the player to snoop in the home areas of each group to “find dirt” on the other group, but they actually end up uncovering some deeper embedded lore about the relationship of the two groups. The end goal of the game is to piece together the full picture of the conflict and unite the groups together again. However, we’re having trouble on a narrative direction, who are the two groups? Are they former roommates? Bitter exes? Passive-aggressive neighbors? I’ve jotted down some ideas for directions below:

Direction 1

Direction 2

A college setting but with an early 2000’s high school drama vibe. You’re a new student to XYZ college—coming in halfway through the semester. Friend groups and cliques have already formed. Where will you fall in the social hierarchy? Search through college dorm rooms, group chats, and burn books to uncover drama and get dirt on different social circles!

Direction 3

You’re a college student looking to room with two former freshman year roommates, but their feud is threatening your housing for next year. Search through their respective dorm rooms to uncover their friendship feud and bring them back together! Similar mechanics of the previous two directions with searching through spaces to uncover narrative clues, but with a a dash of the power of friendship.
