Introduce Yourself – Mateo

Hi! I’m Mateo (he/him), a first-year Master’s student at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA – pronounced ‘karma’). My background is in generative art – (using single ‘-‘ to avoid people thinking this was written by AI) probably now more accurately called procedural art, since “generative” has become strongly associated with AI.

I enjoy creating systems that produce beautiful sensory experiences, similar to those found in video games. At Stanford, my main focus is on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Auditory Neuroscience. I’m particularly interested in simulations, perception, art-making tools, and related topics.

My favorite game is Wordle because it’s something I get to play with my partner, who lives on the East Coast. Every day we challenge each other to guess the word, and it has become a bit of a ritual in our relationship. I’m also a pretty good Mario Kart player and occasionally play here with friends in my studio (if anyone wants to join!). Finally, I’d like to recommend anapp that’s not strictly a game – it’s more of a toy – created by generative music legend Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers: Bloom. If anyone tries it, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Very excited to be here!

About the author

I’m a researcher and developer from Ecuador, specializing in human-computer interaction and auditory neuroscience at Stanford’s CCRMA (Center for Computer Research in Music & Acoustics). I’m part of the VR Design Lab and the Neuromusic Lab, where I explore the interection of creativity, well-being, and computation through perception, learning, simulation, and art-making. My work spans from developing multimodal grammars for learning in virtual reality to designing generative agents that simulate social interactions.
