Sketchnote: Game Architecture

Pokemon uses a mix of interaction loops and arcs.

Examples of interaction loops:

  • Catching Pokemon by lowering their HP then throwing a Poke Ball
  • Pokemon battles, players need to click the correct moves e.g. supereffective moves with type advantage

Examples of interaction arcs:

  • Stop evil team and catch the legendary Pokemon
  • Beating the Pokemon League and become champion

How interaction loops and arcs are mixed:

  • Sandwich of Pokemon catching + battling (loops) with story events like encountering rival, gym leader or evil team (arcs)
  • Game features collection of levels like routes or caves with Pokemon catching + battling (loops) and towns or cities where special events like gym battles happen (arcs)
