Three Possible Directions

Direction 1: Orcs V. Trolls

Premise: A young adult is going about their normal day until they are mysteriously teleported to another world. They find themselves in an underground cave village where they meet a peaceful orc society that is currently at war with an oppressive militaristic troll faction that inhabits the overworld. The orcs think that our protagonist is the chosen one meant to liberate them, so they gift them a spell book to aid them in their quest. Our protagonist notices that there is what seems like, an interdimensional portal with a big gem missing. The orcs informed him that the trolls had stolen the gem that powers the portal before they made their way down the cave. Slowly but surely they make their way up towards the surface, encountering different creatures along the way– some friendly, others not so much. Our hero’s main objective is to retrieve the missing gem to go back home.

Narrative: Embedded. Our hero will have to interact with non-playable characters (NPCs) to uncover the history between the two factions and to find a way back home.

Types of Fun: Fantasy, Narrative, Discovery, Challenge

Direction 2: Elves v. Wizards

Premise: A young protagonist and their younger brother are flying a hot air balloon to explore uncharted territory. A mysterious storm causes them to crash land. The protagonist lands on top of a tree and wakes up to find that their younger brother is missing. They try looking for the hot air balloon but only see the balloon tangled in the trees– the basket, coal-powered furnace, and ropes are missing. A villager from a nearby elf village lets them know that he saw their younger brother be taken prisoner by the evil wizard society. Not only does our protagonist want to save their brother, but they need to find the missing pieces to their hot air balloon to go back home. The elf society has enchanted gear that may help the protagonist in their journey.

Narrative: Embedded. Our protagonist will learn more about where the missing pieces of the hot air balloon are as they visit different villages looking for their brother.

Types of Fun: Fantasy, Narrative, Discovery, Challenge

Direction 3: Only Up

Premise: A younger explorer stumbles into a ravine when they are running away from a magical creature that they have never seen before. Luckily, they survive the fall. Unfortunately, they lack the gear to climb back up. Instead, they find a lit tunnel that leads to pre-built rooms and corridors. As they delve deeper into the cave system, they discover that it is slowly going up in elevation. They have no choice but to find any materials along the way which may aid him in surviving the venture upwards. They are not alone. They must collect, farm, and craft their way up to the surface, battling strange creatures on their way up.

Narrative: Embedded and elements of emergent. The story is presented through cinematic cutscenes, but the player will have to decide how they accumulate the necessary resources to survive until the last level before hitting the surface.
