P2 Individual Brainstorm – Oumnia Chellah

Game: After the Fire is a game about grief, hope and connection. It gives players the ability to build a forest back after a forest fire, and helps them feel connected to the plants and spirits of the forest.

Directions:

Concept 1: The player helps restore the forest patch by patch, and the game ends when the player completes all the levels (patches). This would include a narrative component, as the player would encounter different spirits/plants along the way, converse with them, and learn more about the inhabitants of the forest and the player’s own relationship with the forest.

Aesthetics: Narrative, Discovery

Concept 2: The player stays in the same patch of land the entire time, and unlocks new abilities and resources as they play the game more and take better care of their forest. In this version, there would be more room for the player to be creative in the way they maintain their forest. This would be a game that allows players to relax, as every time the players play our game they will be coming back to an environment that is familiar, instead of exploring new environments each time.

Aesthetics: Submission, Expression

Concept 3: Instead of taking care of the existing forest and restoring it, the player adds new plants to a forest that was completely demolished. In this version, the player needs to make decisions about where to place different plants, which forest spirits to call upon, and which resources to use. The player decides to end each day and proceed to the next (this is inspired by the game Civilization), and the player wins the game if they are able to return the forest to life after a certain number of rounds. This concept is more strategy heavy.

Aesthetics: Challenge, Expression, Submission
