We started by deciding on the premise and general story of the game before splitting off to explore some potential game directions with this theme. So far, our project revolves around a nature spirit dealing with the aftermath of their home’s destruction. After their forest has burned down, they set out to rebuild it. Below are different directions we could take with this project:

Direction 1: The Mystery

Premise: After a fire destroys the forest, the Spirit wakes up in the ruins of what was once their home. The Spirit must now explore the world, make new friends, and help them rebuild the parts of the ecosystem that once thrived without knowing the cause or the state of the spirits that once inhabited the forest. With the cause of the fire a mystery, the Spirit completes regrowth goals while slowly uncovering clues to figure out what caused the fire.

Direction 2: Survival

Premise: During a fire that wipes out a magical forest teeming with conflicting spiritual tribes, a young forest Spirit finds the tiny clearing they call home miraculously untouched. As the resident of the forest’s only part that is still thriving, the Spirit becomes the center of attention for every spirit community in the forest. The Spirit stays in his home, nurturing his plants and resources to prepare for the winter. With a ticking clock, the Spirit must make allies and tough choices to give the forest its best chance of survival now that their magical world is in ruins. Their home may not survive the winter.

Direction 3: Platforming and Puzzles

Premise: The fire spirit king has gone rogue, destroying the forest and forcing the other spirits into hiding. One brave forest Spirit makes his mission to stop the out-of-control fire spirits to save his friends and home. Through a series of puzzles and levels, the Spirit must travel through the forest’s ruins, recruiting friends along the way to take on the biggest threat to the magical forest.
