MDA & 8 Types of Fun

A game that I love playing with friends is Fortnite. A core part of Fortnite is the set mechanics around looting. When you drop into the game with a team of friends, you start with nothing, but you must quickly acquire loot (weapons, shields, bandages, and other power-ups). Sometimes, loot is few and far between. You must break down walls and structures to open shining golden chests that contain loot. Some loot is rare, some are common. The mechanic of racing to find rare loot in uncharted territory with your team before other teams creates two types of fun for me. The first type is discovery: I am forced to explore new areas to find the loot and if I’m lucky, I’ll find a secret bunker for example with tons of rare loot! The second type is fellowship: in Fortnite, I’m always thinking about how to help my team survive and hopefully win the game. Thus, the feelings and strategies around sharing loot between my team is an excellent type of fun that I would categorize as fellowship.
