Playing Super Smash Bros. as Princess Peach provided a feminist lens to critique the game’s representation of female characters. Smash’s decision to include Princess Peach challenged gender norms by embodying a powerful female character in the male-dominated gaming industry. It symbolized breaking free from the stereotype that women are helpless. Princess Peach’s unique abilities show her strength and capabilities. Super Smash Bros. is not immune to feminist critique. The oversexualization and objectification of female characters, including Princess Peach, perpetuate harmful stereotypes and contribute to objectification in gaming. Additionally, the limited representation of female characters reinforces the idea that women are a minority in gaming.
Super Smash Bros. intersects with and falls short of feminist theories discussed in “Play Like a Feminist.” Embracing intersectionality by incorporating a diverse range of female characters would better represent women’s experiences, but instead, more than half of the women on the Smah roaster are some time of “princess”.
To improve the game from a feminist standpoint, Super Smash Bros. could address objectification by providing practical costume options that prioritize functionality over sexualization. Introducing more female characters, including diverse backgrounds, would promote representation and inclusivity.
Playing as Princess Peach in Super Smash Bros. made me feel more pretty than empowered; but it was nice to have the option to even play female characters which is a low bar for challenging gender norms. Smash is definitely not without critique. By incorporating feminist perspectives, Super Smash Bros. could empower players further and create a more inclusive gaming environment. Addressing objectification and providing diverse representation would enhance the game’s feminist stance.
