P2 Checkpoint 1 – Team 5 Individual Concepts – Derek

The team is mostly converging on a murder-mystery type of narrative which takes place in an abandoned hotel. Imagine this game to lean into horror and general creepiness. A set of games that do this really well in my opinion are Chilla’s Art games (pictured in the upper left). I also added some environments from games like Lethal Company and Content Warning to get a sense of what an “abandoned” environment may look and feel like.

Emotions: Creepy and suspenseful

Concept 1: The Murderer and His Daughter

Kind of Fun: Narrative, Discovery, Sensation

A game about a misunderstanding about a troubled father and his murder victim, his own daughter. In this game, there would be two main characters, the troubled father (NPC) and his daughter (Player). The story would start on the first floor of the abandoned hotel and would involve the two of you working together to escape the hotel. Along the way, you learn about and sympathize with the father’s troubled past and his motivations for murder. You also slowly piece together clues that you are in fact the murder victim. At the end of the narrative, you are met with two choices, to forgive or to take revenge. 

Concept 2: The Detective

You are an experienced detective and you have been assigned to an “impossible” case. You are tasked with solving a 50 year old human mass disappearance case which ruined the reputation of the Drofnats Hotel. Since the hotel has long been out of commission, the only way to enter is from the roof. You will venture down the floors of the Drofnats Hotel, but it seems that time has destroyed much of the building, so you will need to be creative in how to venture through the building. Use your magnifying glasses and sharp intuition to piece together a 50 year old conspiracy.

Concept 3: Treasure Hunters

Kind of Fun: Narrative, Fantasy, Challenge

You are the leader of a treasure hunter group. The group has been hired to find a legendary knife which will allow its user to commit the perfect crime. Not much is known about the legendary knife, but it is known that it is in the Drofnats Hotel, somewhere. However, you will realize that it is a trap when some of your members never return from the scouting missions. You must find a way to escape and/or take down the mysterious assailant. Stay one step ahead by scouting future floors, creating anti-traps, and predicting your opponents moves.
