Critical Play: Puzzles

Fireboy and Watergirl  is a classic online web and mobile puzzle game created by Oslo Albert. It is technically a 2-player game, but 1 player can play as both characters (fireboy/watergirl), and the objective is to explore the forest temple by solving puzzles and accessing various “rooms.”

The game starts off with an introductory room to help introduce players to the core mechanics and interaction loops in the game—as you can see from the above screenshots, the first room provides mental models for players to learn about how to interact with various basic puzzle mechanisms for the game, such as fire, water, green goo, levers, buttons, and boxes. It also provides the model of using the arrow/WASD keys to move both players and the collateral objective of collecting crystals.

As the game goes on, a few types of fun are created: fantasy, challenge, and fellowship. Since the game uses a soundtrack that evokes a mystical, ancient feel, it is easy for the player to become immersed in the setting of exploring the temple. Then, since it can be played with 2 people and many of the levels require you to work together, the aesthetic of fellowship is created from the dynamic of collaboration. Lastly, since the game is primarily a puzzle game, the aesthetic of challenge is inherently created from the need for players to think strategically about how to maneuver the map of each room, and also, the timer mechanic comes into play for this as well, causing players to feel a sense of urgency and add to the challenge.

At the end of each level, statistics about your performance are displayed, creating an incentive for players to try and achieve checks in all 3 categories in the following level, since it is incredibly satisfying and rewarding to see the 3 categories all be checked and the jewel to be green.

Overall, the game is super fun and very easy to spend a lot of time on, and the ease and accessibility of the game platform (since it is free) sets Fireboy and Watergirl apart from its competitors, as well as the collaborative aspect since it is a fun way to pass the time with someone else.
